Amersham Pharmacia Biotech and Beckman Coulter, Inc. Announce Collaboration Agreement

SUNNYVALE and FULLERTON,Calif. (March 16, 2000) – Amersham Pharmacia Biotech and Beckman Coulter, Inc. (NYSE:BEC) announced today that they have concluded a key collaboration agreement. It covers the use of Beckman Coulter's capillary electrophoresis technology for DNA sequencing and future development activities. The technology is currently used in Beckman Coulter's CEQ™ 2000 DNA analysis system as well as in Amersham Pharmacia Biotech’s MegaBACEä 1000 DNA sequencer.

The new agreement extends an ongoing relationship between the two companies that has been established through cooperative efforts on several projects, including the automated plate storage and handling for Amersham Pharmacia Biotech’s LeadSeekerä drug discovery system.

"Under this latest agreement, Beckman Coulter and Amersham Pharmacia Biotech will collaborate to develop capillary coatings and matrices to meet the unique requirements of CE in DNA sequencing and fragment analysis applications," explained Keith Offord, Director of the Genetic Analysis Development Center for Beckman Coulter.

"This exciting partnership will combine the strengths and resources of both companies to advance capillary electrophoresis technology, and benefit the distinct, separate markets that each company serves," said Peter Coggins, Vice President of Drug Discovery for Amersham PharmaciaBiotech.

The CEQ 2000 from Beckman Coulter is an eight capillary sequencer and fragment analyzer designed for the medium-low throughput market, whereas the 96-capillary MegaBACE from Amersham Pharmacia is focused on high throughput sequencing and genotyping. Each company will continue to commercialize their own products.

Amersham Pharmacia Biotech is at the frontier of new healthcare, providing the technologies to discover, develop and deliver therapies faster and more cost-effectively then ever before. Owned 55% by Nycomed Amersham plc (NYSE: NYE; LSE: NAM) and 45% by Pharmacia & Upjohn Inc, it is an international market leader in most of its markets. Its innovative systems are used to sequence genes, uncover the structure and function of genes and proteins, separate biomolecules, screen potential drugs and manufacture biopharmaceuticals.
