Prostate cancer is the second-most common cancer affecting men in the U.S. According to the American Cancer Society, one in six men will get the disease at some point in his lifetime. But with regular screening, the disease can be detected at an early stage when it is more easily treated and cured. Tests for prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and free PSA offered by Beckman Coulter play a vital role in providing safe and effective prostate cancer screening.

Hybritech® PSA and free PSA Tests for Prostate Cancer
Hybritech PSA and Hybritech free PSA test kits from Beckman Coulter are among the most trusted assays in clinical use today.
The Hybritech Tandem-R PSA test was the first test approved by the FDA for the detection of prostate cancer when used in combination with digital rectal examination (DRE) in men aged 50 years or older. The Hybritech Tandem-R free PSA test -- also the first test of its kind to receive approval -- helps improve the accuracy of prostate cancer detection. (The Tandem-R tests were manual tests; Beckman Coulter now manufactures Hybritech Access® PSA and free PSA tests, which are run on an automated analyzer. References in this site refer to the Access methods, unless otherwise noted.)
Why a Hybritech PSA and free PSA Test?
The Hybritech PSA and free PSA tests are widely regarded as among the most trusted tests for prostate cancer detection. Indeed, the commonly used cutoffs and other criteria for evaluating PSA and free PSA results by other PSA test manufacturers are based on the performance of the original Hybritech tests. Because PSA tests are not all standardized, these cutoffs and criteria do not necessarily apply to other manufacturers’ assays.
The original research that led the FDA to declare the PSA test as a safe and effective method for detecting prostate cancer was performed using the Hybritech Tandem-R PSA test because of its desirable characteristics. The Hybritech Tandem-R free PSA test was used in the research that established the usefulness of free PSA.
If a patient’s PSA test was performed with a Hybritech test, it is also important that his free PSA be measured with the Hybritech free PSA test, because PSA and free PSA results must be calibrated to each other.

Prostate Cancer Awareness Week
Beckman Coulter is proud to sponsor Prostate Cancer Awareness Week, a program that provides free or low-cost prostate cancer screenings across the country. For these events, Beckman Coulter donates its Hybritech® PSA and free PSA tests, as well as tests for testosterone and total cholesterol. Prostate Cancer Awareness Week is a project of the Prostate Cancer Education Council (PCEC), a consortium of leading physicians, health educators, scientists and prostate cancer advocates.
Beckman Coulter also sponsors races in the PACE Race 5K Run/Walk Series. The PACE Races are a series of events throughout the U.S. held to increase awareness and early detection of prostate cancer, and to educate men and their families on treatment options and other men’s health issues.
