T3 Update Online -- Tips, Tricks and Techniques for Users of Beckman Coulter Life Science Automation

Printer Friendly Printer Friendly

Welcome From the Editors – Q2 2009 Issue

In this issue of T3 Update Online, we offer an extensive recap of LabAutomation 2009, which was held in late January in Palm Springs, Calif. The show gave us an opportunity to meet many of you face-to-face, but for those of you who weren’t able to attend, we’ve got you covered—just follow the links to the workshop presentation materials and posters.

We are pleased to have offered five workshop presentations, two of which are included in this issue:

  • “Cell Culture Automation in Biopharma,” by Dr. Christoph Krüll of Beckman Coulter Europe, introduces automated cell cultivation systems for cell line optimization and monoclonal antibody production from Beckman Coulter.
  • “Improve Laboratory Processing for Nucleic Acid Analysis, Through Miniaturization and Submicroliter Dispensing,” by Amy Yoder of Beckman Coulter, showcases miniaturized applications on the BioRAPTR FRD™, including PCR, STR (short tandem repeats), cloning and transformation.

Our posters covered topics including:

  • Beckman Coulter’s partnership with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to create libraries for commercial yeast strains through miniaturization of cloning and transformations;
  • automation of Promega’s Multitox-Fluor Multiplex Cytotoxicity assay for the breast cancer cell line, MCF7;
  • automatic cell, compound and reagent dispensing for the AlphaScreen* cAMP assay for the human epithelial carcinoma cell line, A431;
  • automated dispense of P2RY11 CHO-K1 GPCR cell-based assay for division-arrested cells;
  • purification of gDNA from whole blood with the Agencourt Genfind™ v2 Purification System using the Biomek® 3000 Laboratory Automation Workstation and SPRI® (Solid Phase Reversible Immobilization) bead technology; and
  • integrated Biomek workstations that can be incorporated into cultivation processes to provide functionality to streamline automated cell handling.

Improve Laboratory Processing for Nucleic Acid Analysis, Through Miniaturization and Submicroliter Dispensing
Amy Yoder, Beckman Coulter, Inc.
Miniaturized applications on the BioRAPTR FRD™are showcased, including PCR, STR (short tandem repeats), cloning and transformation. It covers strategies for miniaturizing an assay, as well as pitfalls and the advantage of using DOE (design of experiment) throughout the miniaturization process. Cost savings of the miniaturized applications covered ranges from 83-98% savings from the full-scale reaction.
