Every year we put together development plans because we invest in our careers. We know from the Danaher Business System that, in order to advance, we need an action plan. A winning development plan promotes opportunities and provides clear direction on how to improve our skills and advance our careers.

How do you put together a winning development plan that will help you meet your goals—and your next favorite job? Here are some tips from Beckman Coulter HR pros.

Tip 1: Create two development plans

According to Pallavi Menon, a senior HR manager in India, “It’s ideal for associates to have one development plan that addresses current gaps and one that addresses gaps regarding future roles.” Caroline Harris, an HR business partner of global operations based in Ireland agrees. “Describe the behavioral competencies that will be required to achieve your development goal and clearly identify what good will look like if you achieve it.”
Make your development goals SMART: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound.

Tip 2: Talk to other people

An alignment conversation with your manager is vital to validate your development goals. Your manager should book this meeting with you—but if that doesn’t happen, book the meeting yourself. Caroline also suggests, “Identify specific people for you to actively network with and define the benefit of each of them in line with your development plan. Share your career objectives with them and ask for advice on how to develop your skill set.”

Tip 3: Make your goals SMART

How effective will your plan be at helping you get from where you are to where you want to be? As we’re told in Danaher: if it matters, measure it. Make your development goals SMART: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound.

Tip 4: Sustain your plan

Manage the tactics within your action plan daily to maximize your chances of successful outcomes. Pallavi recommends, “Keep checking progress against your plan regularly to keep your focus right. A great plan can get derailed in the absence of focus and follow-up.”

Tip 5: Keep your resume up to date

You are the driving force in your own career development, accountable for being proactive and identifying how you would like to develop your career. As you accomplish your goals, remember to update this information on your resume and/or LinkedIn profile to make it easier to share with others.
