Cells of the innate immune system, such as monocytes and neutrophils, are the first line of defense against infections. Monocytes perform multiple immunological functions and play a role in the development of sepsis-induced inflammation and immunosuppression. In the presence of sepsis, these cells produce a flood of inflammatory cytokines, causing widespread inflammation that can lead to death.
Monocyte distribution width (MDW) is a novel cellular marker of monocyte anisocytosis that can add significant value to white blood cell count and help detect sepsis in patients entering the emergency department.

Dr. Elena Sukhacheva has more than 15 years of experience in the diagnostic industry and is director of medical and scientific affairs, with global responsibility for Beckman Coulter's research in the field of laboratory hematology. She is a member of the American Society of Hematology (ASH) and International Society of Laboratory Hematology (ISLH), and corporate representative at the International Committee on Standardization in Hematology (ICSH).
Elena Sukhacheva is a graduate of Lomonosov Moscow State University and holds a Ph.D. in molecular biology from Shemyakin-Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Russian Academy of Sciences. She has research experience in various subjects, including Hematology, Immunochemistry, and the development of diagnostics test system for research and clinical applications.
She has vast experience the fields of laboratory flow cytometry and hematology, which has led to the publishing of more than 50 research papers and a patent involving high-sensitivity parameters for the detection of vitamin B12 or folate deficiencies and the method of use.
