Antimicrobial Resistance and Detection: A Continued Critical Issue
Antimicrobial resistance and detection: A continued critical issue
Emerging antimicrobial resistance continues to be a critical issue in today’s healthcare environment. Resistance that was once considered unusual is now routine, and the microbiology laboratory has increasingly many ways, including rapid methods, to test for antimicrobial resistance. This symposium will examine the central role of susceptibility testing and the determination of MICs in a variety of laboratory health care settings. Topics examined include new mechanisms of resistance, laboratory testing protocols and standardization across organizations, and the importance of MICs as well as SIR categories in defining antibiotic treatment, particularly with new antibiotics.

The Clinical Microbiology Lab in 2021: Resistance Detection and More
In Clinical microbiology laboratories worldwide in 2021 are facing more challenges than ever due to antibiotic resistance (AMR). The epidemiology of AMR and EUCAST guidance regarding interpretive breakpoints are important information for the laboratory and clinician. Equally important are the challenges faced by all laboratories—including those in resource-limited settings regarding the balance of diagnostics and stewardship. Routine antibiotic susceptibility testing and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) accuracy are needed to meet the clinical needs of all patients. There are new antibiotics in the development pipeline that will be of importance in the future.
Industry Chair: Emilia Cercenado (Spain)
Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón, Madrid

Review the Scientific Posters Prepared for ECCMID 2020
Poster Multicenter Evaluation of Cephalexin MIC Results for Enterobacterales
See the ECCMID 2020 poster demonstrating that cephalexin MIC results for Enterobacteriales correlate well with the MICs obtained using frozen reference panels. Review details from this multicenter study which used EUCAST interpretive criteria.
Poster MicroScan Meropenem/vaborbactam MIC Results Correlate with ISO/CLSI Reference Panels
Review the details showing the accuracy of meropenem/vaborbactam MIC panel results for Enterobacterales and P. aeruginosa correlated with frozen ISO/CLSI broth microdilution reference panel. Analyze the multicenter study’s methods, quality control parameters and conclusions based on EUCAST interpretive criteria.
