Monocytes and Their Role in Sepsis

Monocytes in Sepsis

The Science Behind Early Sepsis Indicator: Why Do Monocytes Matter?

P.A.C.E. Credit*

The global burden of sepsis in healthcare calls for better, early detection and diagnostic testing.

Cells of the innate immune system, such as monocytes and neutrophils, are the first line of defense against infections. Monocytes perform multiple immunological functions and play a role in the development of sepsis-induced inflammation and immunosuppression. In the presence of sepsis, these cells produce a flood of inflammatory cytokines, causing widespread inflammation that can lead to death.

Monocyte distribution width (MDW) is a novel cellular marker of monocyte anisocytosis that can add significant value to white blood cell count and help detect sepsis in patients entering the emergency department.

View this on-demand webinar to hear Elena Sukhacheva, Ph.D., discuss the new sepsis biomarker, Early Sepsis Indicator. She will review the scientific evidence behind this new biomarker and explain why monocytes are important to sepsis. During this webinar you will:

  • Review statistical information about sepsis
  • Learn about the biology of monocytes: origins, main functions and subpopulation
  • See morphological changes of monocytes in infection
  • Discover the key roles of monocytes in sepsis pathogenesis
  • Hear about new sepsis diagnostic opportunities and information from clinical trials
